Stretched Della stretched Boyoma: Which leather should you choose for your stirrups girth straps?

Stretched Della stretched Boyoma: Which leather should you choose for your stirrups girth straps?

What is a side ?

The side is wet-finished and then stretched over frames while drying. Under this sustained tension, the leather loses its residual elasticity even before it is put into service.

Unstretched leather, even high-quality leather, will continue to stretch gradually with use before reaching its final shape. For items subjected to repeated stress, such as stirrups grith straps, side therefore provides immediate stability and reduces the need for readjustment.

Why the third butt area butt not somewhere else?

At Radermecker, our drawn strips are made from a butt into three equal pieces, hence the name "third of butt." This is no coincidence: it is a deliberate technical choice, driven by the mechanical requirements of the saddlery components.

The butt the thickest and most uniform part of the hide; once the flanks, shoulder ends have been removed, it has no flaws and cuts cleanly—a quality essential for parts subjected to high stress.

Della and Boyoma: two tanning processes, the same high standards

The difference between the two leathers lies in their tanning process.

The Della is mineral-tanned: it is soft the box, easy to assemble in the workshop, and responsive in the hand from the very first use.

Boyoma leather undergoes a two-step tanning process: first vegetable tanning, followed by mineral retanning, which gives it a denser grain and a patina that deepens over time.

The choice is yours!

What are the applications for our stretched strips?

Both leathers are designed for use in the manufacture of stirrups grith straps . These components are subjected to repeated and direct mechanical stress, including the rider’s weight, constant movement, and changes in weather conditions. It is precisely to meet these requirements that Della and Boyoma are made from the butt end of butt processed using side : this ensures immediate dimensional stability, with no gradual stretching over time.

Their tallow-treated finish gives them natural resistance to moisture and salty environments, requiring no special maintenance—a major advantage for heavy outdoor use.
